May 19th music festival at Marshall Elementary: Although this sounds like a worthwhile event, MPS will not be participating this year due to scheduling conflicts.
Scholarship and Awards Update:
Bob Shedd reported that 110 blocks have been ordered for a total of $1,871, and 27 choir, 23 band, and 17 orchestra senior medallions have been ordered for a total of $770. These will all be ready in time for end of year distribution. 10 completed MPS scholarship applications were turned in. Each qualified applicant will receive a $300 scholarship given out at senior awards night.
Discussion of board positions for next year: Krista Richey would like to take a break from her position as Membership Chair for the 2017-2018 school year. Michelle Uchiyama will possibly take over this position. Willing to continue for another year are: Kathy Kelley as President, Beth Watson as Secretary, Helen Wu as Treasurer, Jeanne Marie French as Vice-President/Spaghetti Dinner Head, and Bob Shedd as Scholarship/Awards Chair. Kathy will ask Lisa Haidinyak if she would like to continue as Fundraising Chair.
Membership Report: The group voted to purchase two 2-day Disneyland park hopper tickets to help with the 2017-2018 MPS membership drive.
• Beth Watson will not be present at the May 17 meeting, so someone else will be needed to take minutes
• Should the MPS board meet in August to get a head-start on membership for next year?
• March 2 is the set date for the 2018 Spaghetti Dinner (or other concert fundraising event)
• Next year’s meetings will continue on the second Wednesday of each month.
Meeting adjourned at 7:33pm.
Next meeting date: May 17, 2017
Minutes respectfully submitted by Beth Watson
The Music Parents' Society is a registered 501c3 tax-exempt music booster organization for Castro Valley Unified School District.
We provide volunteers and additional funds to our vocal and instrumental music department. In turn this also benefits the drama/theater at the middle schools and high school, which are fantastic as well.
We also provide annual College Music Scholarships for multiple graduating high schools students.
All MPS board members have a voice in disbursements from the MPS general fund, and look for new ways to keep the community aware of music program issues and needs. Please click here for a full description of each position.
